The Casting Directors’ Guild announces new committee members, and the formalisation of an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion group

The Casting Directors’ Guild is delighted to announce two new committee members, Jane Anderson and Stuart Burt, and the formalisation of an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) working group, to promote and prioritise these values in the casting profession, both within the Guild itself, and the work of its members.

On the central committee, Jane Anderson and Stuart Burt join ongoing members Victor Jenkins (Chair), Jessica Ronane (Vice Chair), Andy Brierley and Kate Ringsell.

The EDI Group (Equality, Diversity & Inclusion) was started two years ago on an informal basis, to seek out ways to be proactive in promoting these values within the casting profession. The group has now been formalised, consisting of twelve CDG members taking on varying areas of responsibility. Some of the bigger projects they have underway include:

  • Creating a paid casting internship for people who are currently under-represented
  • Professionally auditing audition spaces for accessibility
  • Initiating a system of diversity data monitoring within the CDG
  • Meet and greet events for D/deaf and disabled actors to meet casting directors
  • Increasing representation in the CDG’s social media output
  • Finding ways to help members understand and encourage the use of sensitive terminology in regards to different identities

The EDI are working alongside the CDG committee to update the Guild’s Code of Conduct, and have built working relationships with the Personal Managers Association (PMA)’s Diversity Group, and the Independent Commission for Race Equality launched by Equity.

Victor Jenkins said: “I am proud to be heading into my 4th year as Chair of the Guild, and I’m very excited to have Jessica Ronane as Vice Chair, and a committee made up of fellow experts in our field.

The very nature of our jobs means that our work happens away from the public eye, behind the camera, in the wings, ensuring that the artists we work with have safe, private spaces to create. That being said, as our industry grows and changes, the Casting Directors’ Guild renews its commitment to being as accessible, transparent, and accountable as possible. We are living through a time of great change and we feel fortunate, as a front facing organisation, to be charged with steering our working practices for the benefit of all.

With all that in mind, we look forward to a productive, busy & restorative year.”

The third CDG Casting Awards in partnership with Spotlight will take place on Tuesday 16 February 2021 during an online ceremony, to recognise casting achievements across Film, TV, Theatre and Commercials from the last year.

Victor Jenkins, Chair of the Casting Director’s Guild commented: “In a year that saw the very first BAFTA wins for Scripted Casting in both TV and Film, we are delighted to be able to present the third annual CDG Awards, celebrating the creative vision of casting on stage and on screen.

The pandemic has unquestionably had a devastating effect on our industry, and the theatres most of all. We must recognise that without the theatres we would not have many of the world-beating productions that have made it to our screens. And like a lot of industries, we have had to adapt and support each other. Our industry only shines when each of its sectors thrives.

The list of nominees highlights a really exciting range of home grown and international talent, and showcases many of the productions that have kept the whole nation gripped pre, during and post lockdown – on screen and on stage (albeit sometimes via screen). These are all achievements that deserve recognition and celebration.”

Richard Wilson, CEO of Spotlight added: “We have always believed that the work of casting directors should be celebrated by our industry, which is why Spotlight is so proud to continue partnering with the CDG for their annual Awards. Huge congratulations to all the nominees, and all of the CDG, who have continued to deliver such incredible work through one of the toughest years in memory for our industry.”

Statement from the Casting Directors’ Guild Committee

The Casting Directors’ Guild committee calls on the UK’s television and film industry, in light of COVID-19, to safeguard the future of UK theatre and theatre makers. The talent fostered in theatres throughout Great Britain and Ireland is envied around the world and is endlessly drawn on by screen media. We believe that television and film production companies must confront a stark reality: that, without your help, the talent pool which we all rely on faces its greatest existential threat in a generation.

In 1963, Anthony John, a theatre director (and father of current CDG Vice Chair Priscilla John), informed Howard Thomas, who ran the Associated British Corporation, that without financial assistance from the more affluent television sector, the theatres in which they found their directors, writers and actors would be run dry.

Aware that his network’s hugely influential Armchair Theatre had relied on and ultimately depleted talent both on and off stage, Thomas recognised the time to pay back had come and gave John the resources to establish the Regional Theatre Young Directors’ Scheme. The subsequent programme, and the successful writers’ initiative that followed, gave a platform to creators who would go on to push the boundaries of theatre, film and television for the next 50+ years and alumni include Ken Loach, Sue Townsend, Trevor Nunn, Sue Pomeroy & Bill Bryden.

Television and film continue to reap the benefits of UK theatres’ innovation and industry, with artists now celebrated for their screen work – from Sam Mendes to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Abi Morgan to Chiwetel Ejiofor – having forged their careers on and around stages of all sizes in the UK and Ireland. Put simply, television comedy, for example, would be forever changed without the Edinburgh Fringe, leading actors in studio films would never have been discovered without the bold experimentation of affiliate theatres and celebrated screenwriters would have gone unnurtured without their local theatre’s new writing schemes.

It is vital that we, as an industry, acknowledge the grim ramifications of abandoning our theatre colleagues as they face the fallout from COVID-19. The Casting Directors’ Guild call on the more financially robust sectors of the arts to, once again, create unique creative and financial partnerships in a bid to save our theatres and keep the wheel of talent turning, to the benefit of the entire entertainment industry.

The Casting Directors’ Guild Committee: Victor Jenkins (chair), Priscilla John (vice-chair), Andy Brierley, Sophie Parrott, Kate Ringsell & Jessica Ronane

CDG Press Release

CDG welcomes new casting category at the BAFTA’s

“We are thrilled at the news that BAFTA has introduced a category for casting in both their film and television Awards in 2020. The overwhelming industry support since the announcement alone shows just how important this news is to so many of us. We do what we do because we love actors, we love being part of the story telling process, and above all else we are creative people.

The alchemy of casting has long been overlooked in awards categories. I am both personally and professionally over the moon about this most excellent news and on behalf of the Casting Directors’ Guild and its members…and Casting Directors as a whole….send a huge thank you to BAFTA for not one, but two new awards for the craft of casting.

We really hope that the creation of these awards will lead to wider recognition for the huge amount of work that goes into casting for both stage and screen, and instigate further casting categories.

Victor Jenkins, Chair of the Casting Directors’ Guild
